SERVE ONE ANOTHER IN LOVE

“For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another” (Galatians 5:13).

The liberty and advantage that wealth, power, influence and leadership confer is enormous. If care is not taken, it could lead to various forms of abuse. God warns us ahead that the purpose of whatever privileges and resources we have been given is to serve one another in love.

Whereas, the purpose of everything God created is to serve man so he may fulfil destiny, God also wants man to serve one another so that His purpose for all might be fulfilled. Serving one another means positioning yourself to be a blessing to your neighbour, irrespective of his status in life. Jesus demonstrated this to us by serving His disciples. Though they called Him master, He was among them as one who served (Luke 22:27).

The Jesus example teaches that serving one another should never be constructed to mean oppressing other men. The man above must be able to do something for the man below in genuine, humble service. Drawing service from people should never turn into enslavement, otherwise God’s purpose for those who serve you could become subverted. If we all learn this lesson and apply it, the world will be a better place for all.

In applying this principle, we must walk in the Spirit. For God has not given us the spirit of fear and intimidation, but the Spirit of love (2 Timothy 1:7). The Spirit of God will never lead you to use the gifts and blessings of God to oppress men who have been made in the image of God.
