“And God said unto Abraham, Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah hath said unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be called” (Genesis 21:12).
Many times, our walk with the Lord requires that we take tough decisions. When such a demand is placed on you, it is better to listen to God’s voice and trust Him through the process.
Because of some domestic squabbles, Sarah demanded that Abraham should send away Ishmael and the mother, Hagar. When God endorsed what Sarah said, it became a divine command which Abraham was obliged to obey. However, asking Abraham to send away his first son could never have been easy. But Abraham received grace to comply.
We will not always know why God makes seemingly tough demands on us. But we must always trust God, knowing that He does no wrong and will never do anything to hurt us. Abraham might not have understood why he had to part with Ishmael. But he understood that God knew what He was doing, and that His wisdom required that Isaac and Ishmael must be separated so they could fulfil their respective destinies.
God had said it was in Isaac that Abraham’s seed would be counted. But beyond that, God also had good plans for Ishmael. Indeed, God took care of Ishmael and his mother and provided for them. Eventually, Ishmael got married, raised a family, and became a great nation.
Friends, it is good to trust the Lord. In the end, both Isaac and Ishmael were settled by God. Trust Him, He will settle you also.
