“But refuse profane and old wives’ fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness” (1 Timothy 4:7).
Years ago, I read a book titled, “The Christian Life Is Exciting”. Certainly, there is an excitement that comes with knowing the Lord and being in fellowship with Him. Indeed, unspeakable joy flows from the privilege of experiencing the supernatural dimension to life.
The benefits of being born again and having an intimate, personal relationship with God are innumerable. The confidence that grace brings, the blessings that Christ bestows, the comfort that the Holy Spirit gives flow directly from our engagement with God as Father in a personal sense. But all these come at a cost. Whereas salvation remains eternally free, you must pay the price of spiritual discipline to have the best of what God has to offer.
To practice spiritual discipline is to intentionally engage in practices and habits that can help you grow in your relationship with God. You must be willing to pray when others are playing, fast when others are eating, and study the Bible when others are sleeping. Your habitation must be on the mountain of fellowship with God when others are in the valley of worldly pleasure. You must exercise yourself unto godliness.
Consider Ahab who was eating and drinking while Elijah was fasting and praying on the mountain, or Moses who was fasting and communing with God on the mountain while the rest of Israel was partying away. Of these people, we know who experienced the supernatural from the hand of God.
Friends, spiritual discipline is non negotiable for a life of supernatural joy, peace and prosperity. May the Lord help us pay the price.
