“I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish (Luke 13:3).
The ancient path is the narrow way that Jesus spoke about (Matthew 7:14). It is a path that allows only for the perfect will of God. Therefore, uncompromising and irreversible allegiance to the Lord is required if we shall return to the ancient path.
But to get back to the ancient paths, we must travel through the route of repentance because we cannot continue in sin and expect grace to abound. Unfortunately, this generation seems to have lost appetite for repentance. That repentant heart that is quick to accept his errors and seek forgiveness from the Lord is becoming more and more a rarity.
Through Jeremiah, the Lord spoke to the people, urging every one to return from his evil way, and make his ways and doings good. But they were defiant, insisting they would walk after their own devices, and do the imagination of their evil heart (Jeremiah 18:11-12).
Today, God’s people seem to know more than the Lord. We can present a thousand scriptural defence for our errors. This generation has an unprecedented audacity to commit iniquity and stubbornly defend it. But if we shall see the Lord at work again, we must return to the ancient paths where repentance is common and thorough, and the passion to please God overrides the desire to profit from Him.
Jesus always emphasized the need for repentance as prerequisite to accessing God and the things of His kingdom. Repentance remains the door to the ancient paths. It is God who grants repentance (Acts 11:18). May He grant us repentance to the way of life.
